Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is an actress and rapper. The role of Queen Latifah in film, television as well as music has earned her several accolades. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. Her father and mother separated at the time Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah, who was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah means gentle and very generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was eight years old. Latifah is a very tall 5'10 girl who was on the high school basketball squad. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah began to beatbox with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah became part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a group of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. It was signed by Latifah, and released her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
